Captain from British Forces Visits Rock For Vets in Long Beach

On Monday the 11 of July, British Captain David Wiseman visited Rock For Vets and others around the country on his month long visit to the US to see best practices for Veterans groups.

In 2009, while Captain David Wiseman was serving with the British Forces in Afghanistan, he was shot in the chest by the Taliban and narrowly escaped death. Since his medical discharge from the British Forces in 2013, he has attempted to summit Mt. Everest, written a book and works for Prince Harry to organize the summer 2014 Invictus Games as well as competed in the 2014 Games in London and the May 2016 Games in Florida, where he was invited to captain the U.K. team.  Captain Wiseman has dedicated his life to Veteran empowerment, and currently works for Prince Harry and the Royal Foundation on facilitating Veterans’ transition from the military into civilian life in programs including the Endeavour Fund, which supports the ambitions of wounded Veterans to use sport in their path to recovery.

It was an honor to have David meet the Veterans in the Rock For Vets Music Program.  A second special guest also delighted the members of Rock For Vets, a F4 Phantom fighter pilot ‘Uncle Bob’.

It was a great show and thanks to all who attended and all our volunteers and to all the performers. The line up was fantastic: Opened with Opal Jones (thank you) …Erma Varnado, singing the anthem (beautiful job) Blue Steel (great job as always) back to Erma Varnado and her band (great talented musicians)

then….the house band was made up of: Bob Luna The Rock Club – Rock for Vets Music Director / Keys – formerly Dionne Warwick’s music director. Ronnie Ciago – drummer Micheal Sims – guitar Jeff Raigoza – bass George Pandis – horns

Dan Heffernan – horns Ken Tussing – horns (If you are curious who the back up band members are please google
their names, yes all pro musicians)

The house band performed with: Jessica Garcia – Frisco’s carhop and dancers (great job) Comedian – Charles Sanchezz (funny funny man) Manny Lagod (from Don Ho, a true professional) David Elliott (son of Dionne Warwick- wonderful performance)

Then the house rocked with: El Chicano – lead by Jerry Salas (great talent), including Sal Rodriguez of War, Ray Carrion, John Avila of Oingo Boingo, Eddie Avila, Don Tai, and Joey Navarro. Excellent.

The finale act was: Danny Seraphine (original founding member of Chicago) and CTA who rocked the house again with Ed Roth – Keys (Sophie B Hawkins, Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats), Mark Bonila – guitar (Glen Hughes/Keith Emerson), Mick Mahan (from Pat Benatar’s band). Also Jerry Salas, John Avila and Sal Rodriguez assisted on a few tunes.
